Ghana suspends repatriation registration for citizens in South Africa

The High Commission of Ghana in South Africa has announced the temporary suspension of registration for the ongoing voluntary repatriation exercise for Ghanaians living in the country.

According to a statement issued by the High Commission on June 1, 2026, the suspension takes effect from June 2, 2026.

The move is intended to allow officials sufficient time to process and verify the large number of applications already received under the programme.

The repatriation exercise was launched to assist Ghanaians in South Africa who wish to return home voluntarily.

The High Commission disclosed that more than 1,500 Ghanaians have registered so far, creating a significant workload for officials responsible for screening and processing applications.

The statement explained that the temporary halt in registration will enable the High Commission, working together with the relevant Home Affairs authorities, to complete the verification process and ensure that the exercise is carried out in an orderly and efficient manner.

Despite the suspension, the High Commission emphasized that the repatriation programme has not ended. It assured Ghanaians who have not yet registered that there will be another opportunity to do so when the next phase of registration is announced.

“The date of the next phase for new registration will be communicated in due course,” the statement noted, encouraging interested individuals to remain patient and await further updates.

The High Commission also sought to reassure members of the Ghanaian community in South Africa that the temporary suspension should not be interpreted as the cancellation of the initiative.

Instead, it is a measure aimed at ensuring that all existing applications are properly reviewed before additional registrations are accepted.

Officials further expressed appreciation to the Ghanaian community for its cooperation, patience and understanding throughout the process. They noted that the support of the community has been important in helping to ensure a well-coordinated exercise.

The announcement comes as authorities continue efforts to manage the growing number of applications and facilitate a smooth repatriation process for Ghanaian nationals seeking to return home from South Africa.
