The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is expected to receive a report today, Thursday July 9, on petitions filed against former presidential hopeful Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.
The party’s Third National Vice Chairman, Alhaji Osman Masawudu, said the National Disciplinary Committee would present its findings to the leadership after completing its investigations.
Masawudu explained that the National Executive Committee and the National Council had given the committee two weeks to investigate the petitions and prepare its report.
He said the committee was due to submit its findings to the party leadership at noon on Thursday.
“We received seven sets of petitions. It wasn’t only the ones against Ken Agyapong, but for his, we received 11 petitions, including those from the diaspora,” he said.
According to Masawudu, the party referred all the petitions to the National Disciplinary Committee in line with the NPP’s internal disciplinary procedures.
He did not say whether the former Assin Central MP appeared before the committee during the investigation.
Masawudu stressed that every party member is subject to the same rules, regardless of their position or influence.
He also distanced himself from the comments made by Mr Agyapong, saying he did not agree with the remarks that led to the petitions.
“No one is bigger than the party, sometimes you take a bitter pill to heal your sickness.
“My final position is that I do not support what Ken Agyapong said,” he added.
The petitions followed recent public comments by Mr Agyapong that some party members believe harmed party unity and affected efforts to rebuild the NPP after the election.
The National Executive Committee and the National Council asked the disciplinary committee to determine whether the former Assin Central MP had breached the party’s constitution or code of conduct.
The party is expected to decide on its next steps after reviewing the committee’s recommendations.
