Delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have approved a constitutional amendment making the party’s presidential candidate the leader of the party.
The decision was taken on Saturday, October 3, during the party’s National Delegates Conference at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
Under the approved amendment, the NPP’s presidential candidate will serve as the party leader after being elected flagbearer.
The amendment further provides that when the NPP is in government, the sitting President will serve as the leader of the party until a new presidential candidate is elected.
The change replaces the provision adopted in January 2026 which designated the National Chairman as the leader of the party at all material times. The earlier provision had been identified for amendment ahead of the Kumasi conference.
The amendment was among several changes put before delegates for consideration at the conference.
The NPP’s Constitution Amendment Committee had explained that the changes were intended to address gaps identified following the party’s previous constitutional amendments.
With the motion now approved, the party’s leadership structure formally places the flagbearer at the centre of the NPP’s leadership when a presidential candidate has been elected.
