No Ghanaian harmed in South Africa protests — High Commissioner assures

Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quarshie, has assured Ghanaians that no citizen of Ghana has been attacked or affected by the ongoing anti-immigrant protests reported in parts of South Africa.

Speaking amid growing concerns over the demonstrations, Mr. Quarshie stated that Ghanaian nationals living in the country remain safe and have not been targeted by the unrest.

“I can confirm that no Ghanaian has been attacked, no Ghanaian shop has been looted, and our compatriots are safe,” he said.

The assurance comes as reports of anti-immigrant protests in some South African communities have raised fears among foreign nationals, many of whom operate businesses and work in various sectors of the economy.

Such demonstrations have occasionally led to tensions and concerns about the safety of migrants from other African countries.

Mr. Quarshie noted that the Ghana High Commission is closely monitoring developments and remains in constant communication with members of the Ghanaian community across South Africa.

According to him, the mission is working to ensure that citizens receive timely information and support should the situation change.

He further explained that Ghana’s diplomatic representatives are engaging relevant authorities and community leaders while keeping a close watch on events unfolding in affected areas.

The High Commissioner urged Ghanaians in South Africa to remain calm, stay vigilant, and continue to follow guidance from local authorities and the Ghana High Commission.

He also encouraged members of the Ghanaian community to report any concerns or unusual incidents to the mission immediately.

South Africa is home to thousands of Ghanaians who are involved in business, education, professional services, and other economic activities.

While concerns have been raised over the recent protests, Ghanaian officials say there is currently no evidence that citizens of Ghana have been directly affected.

The Ghana High Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Ghanaians living in South Africa and says it will continue to monitor the situation closely while providing updates when necessary.
