Gomoa Central Member of Parliament Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A-Plus, reportedly escaped an attack by angry residents of New Winneba following a deadly clash that has left three people dead and several others injured.
The MP had gone to the Effutu North District Police Command to gather information about the incident when some residents who had gathered at the facility confronted him.
His presence reportedly angered the crowd, forcing security officers to quickly move him away from the area to prevent the situation from getting out of hand.
The Central Regional Police Command later deployed additional personnel to secure the MP and restore calm around the police facility.
The violence occurred on Tuesday, September 1, when a large group of people from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze reportedly stormed New Winneba.
According to the Ghana Police Service, about 300 people armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks attacked residents and allegedly destroyed several properties, including shops, stores and houses belonging to people in the community.
The clashes are believed to be linked to a longstanding land dispute involving communities in the Gomoa area.
The police have confirmed three deaths, while about 15 people, including a police officer, were injured and taken to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for treatment.
Following the violence, police officers from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were deployed to contain the situation.
Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno also ordered additional security support from the National Police Headquarters. The reinforcement included two armoured vehicles to strengthen operations and prevent further violence.
The police have since arrested seven suspects in connection with the incident. Chief Inspector Isaac Entie, Deputy Central Regional Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the arrests and said investigations were ongoing to identify other people who may have been involved.
