South Dayi MP Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor says Parliament will resist any attempt by law enforcement agencies to bypass the established procedure for arresting sitting Members of Parliament.
His comments follow an alleged attempt by officials of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to arrest Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah at the Accra High Court on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.
In a post on X, Mr Dafeamekpor said any attempt to arrest a sitting MP should first be communicated to the Speaker of Parliament, citing Article 117 of the 1992 Constitution.
“As leaders in Parliament, we would resist any attempt to breach the established protocol and the cordial relationship that exists between Parliament and other institutions of state, including EOCO,” he wrote.
He expressed concern about the timing of the incident, noting that Parliament was hosting an ECOWAS Parliament conference in Accra.
According to him, incidents involving alleged breaches of parliamentary procedure could affect Ghana’s image both locally and internationally.
“As of this moment, the Parliament of Ghana is hosting the ECOWAS Parliament in a major conference here at Parliament House in Accra. Such seemingly casual cases of procedural impropriety hurt the sterling image of Ghana here and abroad,” he said.
Mr Dafeamekpor stressed that any allegations against the Manhyia South MP could be pursued but insisted that the appropriate constitutional and parliamentary procedures must be followed.
