The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has commenced pre-screening checks for passengers at the Accra International Airport as part of measures to strengthen security at the country’s main international gateway.
The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) announced that the new checks are being conducted at the entrance to the Departure Hall, before passengers proceed to the check-in area.
Under the new arrangement, all departing passengers are required to have their luggage screened before gaining access to the Departure Hall. The screening involves the use of scanning machines and sniffer dogs.
According to GACL, the additional checks are intended to enhance security and are consistent with procedures implemented at a number of international airports around the world.
The company has consequently advised passengers to arrive at the airport at least three hours before their scheduled departure time. The early arrival is expected to give travellers sufficient time to complete the additional screening, check-in and other boarding requirements without unnecessary delays.
GACL also clarified that access to the Departure Hall will be restricted to passengers who are travelling. Persons who are not scheduled to fly will not be allowed into the hall.
The airport operator urged passengers and other airport users to cooperate with the new security arrangements as authorities work to improve safety and maintain efficient airport operations.
