MMDCEs should remain accountable to the people – Mowire chief

The Chief of Mowire in the Afigya Kwabre South District of the Ashanti Region, Nana Gyamfi Kumanin Sarpong, has called on Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) across the country to strengthen engagement with their communities and remain accountable to the people they serve.

According to the chief, regular interaction between local government officials and residents is essential for effective governance and helps ensure that development efforts reflect the needs of the people.

Nana Sarpong made the remarks while praising the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Afigya Kwabre South, Patricia Pearl Ankrah, for embarking on a week-long public accountability and engagement tour across the district.

The exercise, organised 18 months into the current administration’s term, was designed to update residents on development projects, encourage citizen participation and provide a platform for direct interaction between the Assembly and local communities.

Speaking at a town hall meeting in Mowire, Nana Sarpong described the initiative as a commendable example of transparent leadership. He noted that similar programmes, if replicated by MMDCEs nationwide, would help citizens gain a better understanding of government activities and development projects in their communities.

The chief acknowledged that Mowire still faces several development challenges but said the engagement session gave residents a valuable opportunity to voice their concerns directly to district authorities.

He further described the accountability tour as timely and beneficial, urging other local government leaders to adopt the same approach to governance.

During the interaction, Nana Sarpong highlighted the poor condition of roads in Mowire as one of the community’s most pressing concerns.

He appealed to the DCE to take urgent steps to address the dusty road network, which he said is affecting business activities and posing health risks to residents.

Responding to the concerns, Patricia Pearl Ankrah assured the community that the Mowire road project forms part of a broader district road improvement programme that has already been awarded to contractors.

She explained that implementation has been delayed due to legal challenges but stressed that efforts are underway to resolve the issues.

The DCE expressed confidence that work would resume once the outstanding matters are settled, assuring residents that the Assembly remains committed to improving road infrastructure and addressing the developmental needs of communities across the district.
