The Government has declared Friday, July 3, 2026, as a public holiday to commemorate Republic Day, which falls on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.
A statement issued by the Ministry of the Interior on June 24, 2026, announced that the holiday declaration was made by President John Dramani Mahama through an Executive Instrument (E.I.) in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2001 (Act 601), as amended.
According to the statement, Republic Day remains a statutory public holiday in Ghana. However, since this year’s observance falls in the middle of the week, the President has exercised his authority under the law to move the public holiday to Friday, July 3, 2026.
The decision is expected to provide Ghanaians with an extended weekend while allowing citizens across the country to mark the occasion.
The government has therefore directed that Friday, July 3, be observed as a public holiday nationwide.
Republic Day is an important date in Ghana’s history. It marks the country’s transition to a republic on July 1, 1960, when Ghana officially became a sovereign republic and Dr. Kwame Nkrumah became its first President.
The day serves as a reminder of the nation’s democratic journey, independence, and commitment to self-governance.
The Ministry of the Interior urged all institutions, businesses, and members of the public to take note of the holiday declaration and observe it accordingly.
