FDA closes several food joints in Osu over hygienic permit

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has shut down several food service establishments along Oxford Street in Osu, Accra, for operating without the required food hygiene permits.

The enforcement action was carried out on Thursday, July 16, as part of the Authority’s ongoing efforts to ensure that food businesses across the country comply with public health and safety regulations.

According to the FDA, inspections conducted at the affected establishments revealed that they were operating without the mandatory Food Hygiene Permit Certificate, which is required by law for all food service providers in Ghana.

The Authority explained that the permit serves as an assurance that food businesses meet approved hygiene standards and operate under conditions that protect consumers from potential health risks.

The affected establishments will remain closed until they fulfil all regulatory requirements and obtain the necessary certification to resume operations.

In a statement, the FDA warned food business operators that failure to secure the required permits could result in enforcement measures, including closure of premises and other sanctions provided under the law.

The Authority urged restaurant owners, caterers and other food service providers to regularise their operations by obtaining the appropriate licences and permits to avoid penalties and ensure compliance with national food safety standards.

The FDA has in recent times intensified monitoring and enforcement activities across the country as part of efforts to improve food safety and protect public health.
