Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced plans to replace and upgrade a major transformer at the Batsonaa Primary Substation while engineers continue working to fix several power faults that caused blackouts in many communities across the Ashanti, Tema, and Western Regions on Friday, May 22, 2026.
In a statement released on Friday, ECG explained that the project is part of the government’s Transformer Replacement and Upgrade Programme.
The aim is to improve power supply, reduce overloads, and make the electricity network more stable and reliable.
The company said similar upgrade projects have already been completed successfully at the Adenta, Nmai Dzorm, Lashibi, Teshie-Nungua, and Kumasi Ridge Primary Substations.
As part of the project, ECG will replace the current 20/26 MVA transformer at the Batsonaa Substation with a bigger and more powerful 30/39 MVA transformer.
The work will begin on Sunday, May 31, and continue into Monday, June 1, 2026. During this period, some areas will experience planned power outages lasting about six hours.
