Ignore the distractions – Sammi Awuku urges Bawumia

Former Director-General of the National Lottery Authority and New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart, Sammi Awuku, has urged the party’s 2024 presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, to remain focused on reconnecting with the grassroots and rebuilding the party, despite what he described as distractions from various quarters.

According to Awuku, Dr. Bawumia’s ongoing nationwide engagements with party members and supporters remain crucial to the NPP’s efforts to reorganise following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking during an interaction with party supporters, Awuku praised the former Vice President’s commitment to engaging party faithful across the country and encouraged him not to be deterred by criticism or attempts to undermine his efforts.

“Ignore the distractions and remain focused on the task ahead. The most important thing is reconnecting with our people and rebuilding confidence within the party.”

He noted that the NPP’s path back to power in 2028 would require unity, hard work, and sustained engagement with supporters at the grassroots level.

Awuku stressed that Dr. Bawumia’s post-election outreach programme has provided an opportunity for party members to reflect on the challenges that contributed to the party’s defeat and identify ways of moving forward.

“Our focus should be on strengthening the party, listening to our members, and preparing adequately for the future. That is what matters at this stage.”

The Akuapem North MP also urged party members to avoid internal conflicts and personal attacks that could deepen divisions within the party.

According to him, the NPP’s strength has always been its ability to remain united even during difficult periods, and that spirit must be maintained as the party prepares for future elections.

He further encouraged supporters to rally behind the party’s leadership and contribute positively to ongoing efforts aimed at restructuring and repositioning the NPP.

Awuku’s comments come at a time when the opposition party is undertaking internal reorganisation exercises, including constituency and regional elections, as part of preparations for the 2028 general elections.

The remarks are also seen as a show of support for Dr. Bawumia amid growing discussions within the party regarding its future leadership and strategy.

Despite the challenges facing the NPP following its electoral defeat, Awuku expressed confidence that the party can regain the trust of Ghanaians if it remains united and focused on addressing the concerns of the electorate.

“We have learned valuable lessons. What is important now is to stay focused, work together, and build a stronger party for the future.”
