The Ghana Armed Forces has started early construction work on the Accra–Kumasi Expressway by clearing thick vegetation along the route.
In just a few weeks, troops have already cleared 17.75 kilometres out of the 175.6-kilometre right-of-way.
Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson, shared the update on X on Tuesday, May 5, 2026. He described the progress as fast and said it shows strong momentum on the major road project.
He explained that four military teams work continuously from Asuboa near Akim Oda. Despite difficult weather conditions, they aim to finish this first phase within 20 weeks.
The project covers a 198.7-kilometre, six-lane expressway. The government under President John Dramani Mahama has made it a top priority.
Once completed, it is expected to reduce travel time between Accra and Kumasi from about six hours to roughly two.
In November 2025, the Finance Minister restated the government’s commitment to completing the road within three years, even though some people doubt the timeline.
Senior military officials have also visited the site. Chief of Defence Staff William Agyapong inspected the work and praised the soldiers for their speed and dedication.
During the inspection, he urged the teams to handle properties and farms with care. He advised them to ensure proper valuation before any demolition work takes place.
He also encouraged the troops to maintain their efforts and report any challenges quickly. He assured them that the necessary support would be provided to help them complete the job.
Before the start of the project, Parliament approved a concession agreement. The Ministry of Roads and Highways serves as the contracting authority, while Accra–Kumasi Expressway Limited acts as the concessionaire.
