Sulemana Abdul-Samed, popularly known as Awuche and regarded as Ghana’s tallest man, has passed away at the age of 33.
He died in the early hours of Monday, July 27, 2026, at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), where he had been undergoing treatment following a decline in his health due to complications related to gigantism.
His height was recorded at 7 feet 4 inches (2.24 metres).
Based on Islamic traditions, arrangements are being made for his burial in Tamale.
Awuche hailed from Gambaga in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region and was initially treated at the Baptist Medical Centre (BMC) in Nalerigu before being referred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for specialised care.
His situation garnered national attention after appeals were made for financial support to aid in his treatment.
Businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama subsequently assumed responsibility for the expenses of his medical care at the Tamale Teaching Hospital and expressed his willingness to facilitate specialist treatment abroad if necessary.
It will be recalled that on July 11, 2026, an aide to Mr. Mahama, Rafik Mahama, announced that after a thorough reassessment by doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Awuche’s left leg would not be amputated, as had previously been suggested in the referral from the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu.
He stated that Mr. Mahama remained dedicated to supporting Awuche’s treatment and covering all required medical costs.
