Mahama expected to honour commitment to Anti-LGBTQ Bill – Sam George

Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam Nartey George, says President John Dramani Mahama is expected to fulfil his commitment to the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill if it is finally presented to him for assent.

Speaking on the anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, Sam George expressed confidence that the President would stay true to his publicly stated position on the bill.

“I expect Mahama as President to walk the talk,” Sam George stated while insisting that the bill remains a major priority for its sponsors in Parliament.

The Ningo-Prampram MP, who is one of the principal sponsors of the bill, further assured supporters that Parliament would process the legislation “expeditiously” and forward it to the President for assent.

“There is no bill before President Mahama today,” Sam George clarified during a stakeholder engagement organised by Parliament’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, amid concerns over delays in the process.

He also defended calls by religious groups pressing for the speedy passage of the bill.

“The calls from very respectable groups like the Catholic Bishops Conference are very well placed because of how sensitive and important this is,” he said.

The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill seeks to criminalise same-sex relations, LGBTQ+ advocacy, and related promotional activities in Ghana.

Parliament recently approved a new version of the legislation after an earlier bill passed in 2024 failed to receive presidential assent before the dissolution of Parliament.
