Free SHS Secretariat denies bribery allegations at Kumasi placement centre

The Deputy Ashanti Regional Coordinator of the Free Senior High School Secretariat, Michael Owusu Baafi, has denied allegations of bribery at the Placement Resolution Centre at the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI).

He has cautioned parents and students against paying money to individuals who claim they can facilitate school placements or resolve challenges under the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).

The warning follows allegations that some individuals at the centre were demanding money from parents before attending to their placement concerns.

Mr Baafi dismissed the allegations, stressing that the entire placement resolution process is free and that parents are not required to pay any fee at the centre.

He explained that although students may need to print placement forms and other documents outside the centre, such services are optional and no payment is required at the resolution tables.

According to him, he has personally cautioned parents against giving money to individuals who claim they can assist them and has removed some people from the centre after they were found engaging in such activities.

He warned that parents who choose to pay such individuals do so at their own risk, reiterating that the Ghana Education Service (GES) does not charge any fee for school placement.

Mr Baafi further disclosed that officials at the centre were going beyond their official duties by using their own resources and data to contact schools and secure direct placements for students.

He said officials were also incurring personal expenses to print and forward placement sheets to various schools to facilitate direct placements without charging parents.

“We don’t take money here. If you give any money to anybody, it’s at your own peril. We are admitting students for free,” he said.
