Ex-soldier alleges dismissal from GAF after galamsey arrest

A former soldier of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has alleged that he was dismissed from the military after participating in an operation that led to the arrest of individuals involved in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

The ex-serviceman, Daniel Asiedu, claims his dismissal followed his involvement in an anti-galamsey operation during which suspected illegal miners were apprehended.

He maintains that he was carrying out his duties as a member of the Armed Forces and expected to be commended rather than sanctioned.

According to him, the events that led to his removal from the military began after the operation, which targeted illegal mining activities in a mining community.

He alleges that following the arrests, he became the subject of disciplinary actions that eventually resulted in his dismissal from service.

Mr Asiedu insists that his actions were in line with efforts by the state to combat illegal mining, which continues to threaten Ghana’s forests, farmlands and water bodies.

He argues that he acted professionally and within the scope of his responsibilities as a soldier.

Speaking publicly about his ordeal, he claimed that the circumstances surrounding his dismissal were unfair and has called for a review of the decision.

“I was only doing my work and helping to fight illegal mining. I never imagined that the same operation would eventually cost me my career,” he reportedly stated.

The former soldier is now appealing to the authorities and relevant institutions to investigate the matter and reconsider the decision that ended his military service.
