The Chief of Army Staff, Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, has confirmed the death of a Ghanaian soldier during a counter-terrorism training exercise in the Upper East Region.
The deceased soldier, identified as 218079 Private Adotey of the 6th Infantry Battalion, lost his life after an explosion occurred during an operation in the Binduri Forest area.
The incident happened during “Exercise Storm Shield,” a military training programme designed to improve the readiness and operational skills of security personnel in dealing with emerging threats, especially in border communities considered vulnerable.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the exercise, Major General Gbetanu expressed deep sorrow over the loss.
He described Private Adotey as a dedicated officer who died while serving his country.
“You have demonstrated throughout this exercise and operation, however, on a sad note, and also taking note of the occupational risks and hazards as you are seated wearing this uniform and the ultimate price we sometimes pay in service to our dear nation.
“But it was an unfortunate incident that eventually led to the death of 218079 Private Adotey, a physical training instructor at the 6th Infantry Battalion,” he said.
The Army Chief also extended his condolences to the soldier’s family, fellow officers, and the entire Ghana Armed Forces.
“At this note, I will humbly and with all humility ask ourselves to be upstanding and observe a minute’s silence.”
He stressed the need for continuous military preparedness as security concerns continue to grow across the sub-region.
He also reaffirmed the Ghana Armed Forces’ commitment to protecting peace and national security.
Major General Gbetanu further assured the public that authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
