Emergency GRIDCo repairs to cause power outage in parts of Accra on Sunday

Several communities across Accra are expected to experience power interruptions on Sunday, August 23, as the Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo) carries out emergency works to replace a damaged transmission tower on the Tema–Achimota 161kV transmission line at Ashaiman.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Accra West Region, said the planned outage is necessary to allow GRIDCo to safely replace the damaged tower and restore the affected transmission infrastructure.

The emergency works will begin at 3:00 a.m. and continue until 6:00 p.m., potentially affecting homes, businesses, markets, offices and other electricity consumers in several parts of Accra.

According to ECG, the transmission tower was damaged after a fuel tanker exploded while welding work was being carried out on the tank within the transmission line’s Right-of-Way (RoW).

The incident affected a critical part of the high-voltage transmission network, prompting GRIDCo to undertake urgent replacement works.

ECG has identified two groups of communities that are expected to be affected by the emergency works.
