Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has apologised to customers across the country following temporary disruptions in water supply caused by Wednesday’s nationwide power outage.
In a statement issued on July 29, 2026, the state-owned utility explained that the interruption in electricity supply affected several of its water treatment plants and pumping stations, reducing its ability to produce and distribute water to consumers.
According to GWL, the water shortages were triggered by the nationwide power failure linked to a disturbance on the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS).
The electricity disruption left many of the company’s operational facilities without stable power, forcing a temporary slowdown in water production.
The company noted that because its treatment plants and pumping stations rely heavily on continuous electricity to operate, the power outage significantly disrupted water supply to a number of communities across the country.
GWL assured the public that its technical teams are on standby and ready to restore full operations as soon as a stable electricity supply is fully re-established.
It added that engineers are closely monitoring the situation and will immediately resume normal production once the power supply becomes reliable.
While apologising for the inconvenience caused, GWL appealed to affected consumers to remain patient, assuring them that every effort is being made to restore normal water production and distribution in the shortest possible time.
The water supply challenges came in the wake of a nationwide blackout that occurred in the early hours of Wednesday. The power outage, which began at approximately 3:11 a.m., followed a disturbance on the National Interconnected Transmission System.
