The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced a major investment of GH¢1.11 billion in power infrastructure upgrades in the Ashanti Region, aimed at improving electricity supply reliability and addressing persistent fluctuations.

The initiative forms part of a broader effort to strengthen the country’s power distribution network, particularly in areas experiencing low voltage due to overloaded equipment.

According to ECG, the upgrade exercise will commence on May 6, 2026, and will involve the deployment of approximately 300 new distribution transformers to affected communities across the region.

The company explained that the intervention is expected to provide immediate relief to households and businesses that have been grappling with unstable electricity supply in recent months.

In addition to installing new transformers, ECG will upgrade existing conductors to enhance transmission capacity and support the region’s growing electricity demand.

A Public Relations Officer for ECG in the Ashanti West Region, Benjamin Obeng Antwi, noted that the investment is part of a larger national strategy to improve service delivery and ensure long-term stability in the power sector.

He further indicated that the upgrades will significantly increase system capacity, with ongoing works expected to boost transmission capability from 265 megawatts to 400 megawatts in parts of the region.
