A diesel tanker driver has lost his life after his vehicle caught fire at Asutuare Junction in the Greater Accra Region, authorities have confirmed.

His mate, who was also on board the vehicle, was rescued and rushed to the Akuse Government Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as thick smoke billowed into the sky and flames consumed the tanker.

Residents and motorists in the area quickly moved to safety while emergency personnel worked to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby properties and vehicles.

The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. However, road safety experts say tanker fires are often linked to mechanical faults, fuel leaks, collisions, or overheating.

The incident has renewed concerns about the movement of fuel tankers on major roads across Ghana. Over the years, several tanker-related accidents have resulted in deaths, injuries, and significant property damage, prompting calls for enhanced safety measures within the petroleum transportation sector.

Ghana has previously experienced devastating fuel and gas-related fires, including the 2017 Atomic Junction gas explosion in Accra, which claimed several lives and injured many others.

Police and fire service personnel visited the scene to begin investigations and clear the wreckage from the road. Traffic in the area was temporarily affected as emergency teams carried out their operations.
