A man who attacked a midwife at the Community 22 Polyclinic in Tema has been found guilty and sentenced to a fine of 100 penalty units by the Community 22 District Court.
The court also mandated the offender, Desmond Bosomtwe, to pay GHS 5,000 in compensation to the complainant, Nurse Priscilla Addo.
Furthermore, he has been prohibited from visiting the health facility for the next 12 months, starting from Tuesday, June 9, the date of the judgment. He was additionally required to sign a bond of good behaviour.
In an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Citi News, the Deputy National PRO of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Philemon Gyapong, stated that the Association had anticipated a more severe ruling to act as a deterrent; however, it accepts the court’s decision.
”He was made to sign a bond of good behaviour. He’s to pay a compensation of GHC5,000 to the midwife. The judiciary has acted timeously, and that is what we expected.
“We had hoped the gentleman would receive a stiffer punishment to serve as a deterrent to others. But that is what the law says, we accept it,” he said.
The assault took place on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, when senior staff midwife Priscilla Addo, who was on duty, approached visitors to inform them that official visiting hours had concluded.
She requested that they vacate the ward to ensure a quiet and healing environment for patients, in accordance with hospital protocols.
However, Desmond Bosomtwe, a relative of a patient, refused to comply, resulting in a heated verbal confrontation that escalated into an assault on the midwife, an incident which was recorded on video.
