A 25-year-old mason has been found guilty by the Adentan Circuit Court after admitting to the theft of a four-year-old boy from Kpedze in the Volta Region and transporting him to Accra.
David Kpandoyo, a national of Togo, was convicted by the court, which was presided over by Mrs Angela Attachie, based on his own admission.
The sentencing has been postponed until July 14, 2026.
The prosecution stated that the child went missing from Kpedze on July 1.
Two days later, a resident discovered him wandering in New Legon, Accra, and reported the incident to the police.
Following community announcements, Kpandoyo came forward, asserting that the child was his son.
However, the police requested evidence to support his claim, which he failed to provide, as he could not present the child’s birth certificate or direct officers to the child’s mother.
Investigators later obtained a missing person’s flyer featuring the child’s photograph and his mother’s contact information.
The child’s mother subsequently visited the New Legon Police Station with the child’s birth certificate and confirmed that she did not know Kpandoyo.
During the investigation, Kpandoyo acknowledged that the boy was not his son and confessed to having taken the child from Kpedze while he was working there before bringing him to Accra.
When appearing in court, Kpandoyo stated that he had been drinking when the child approached him.
He informed the court that he had given the boy some money, taken him home, and could not recall what transpired afterwards due to his intoxication.
