The Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has condemned the arrest and detention of Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team. He accused the government of using arrests to intimidate its political opponents.
In a post on X on Sunday, July 12, 2026, Oppong Nkrumah described the government’s actions as worrying.
He said the way officials handled the arrest could weaken Ghana’s democracy and legal system.
“The use of arrests and detention as a tool to intimidate political opponents by this government is just shocking,” he wrote.
According to Oppong Nkrumah, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) arrested Aboagye when he arrived at the Accra International Airport.
He argued that the arrest was unnecessary because Aboagye was easy to locate and did not pose any risk of fleeing.
“When a man is easily locatable, there is no reason for which you will arrest and detain him on a Saturday to be investigated the following week,” he said.
Oppong Nkrumah also expressed concern about the broader impact of such actions. He warned that this approach could reverse the progress Ghana has made over the years in promoting the rule of law.
“The precedents being set by this government just undermine all the decades of progress we’ve made as a country on matters of rule of law,” Oppong Nkrumah added.
EOCO officers, with support from immigration officials, arrested Miracles Aboagye shortly after he arrived in Ghana on Sunday.
The NPP says Aboagye’s lawyers and some senior party officials have not been allowed to see him.
The party also claims that authorities have not filed any charges against him.
