Former Works and Housing Minister, Samuel Atta Akyea, has labelled the Sagleme Housing Project as a disgrace to Ghana.
He expressed his astonishment that a nation like Ghana could secure $200 million for housing construction, only for the project to devolve into a white elephant.
“It is an embarrassment to this great nation of ours. That we got a loan of $200 million to do 5000 housing units, and now it’s a white elephant. Some people have invaded the space, taken off some infrastructure, and messed up the place,” he stated in an interview.
He believed that President John Dramani Mahama would prioritise this project upon his re-election, but that expectation has not been fulfilled.
“So I thought that when we couldn’t complete Sagleme, which was also an NDC project that should have been the priority of the second-term King and President Mahama, that this project became a mess and now that God has given me a second chance, I will go and fix it.
They are still playing with it and talking about a foreign investor coming to continue where they left off; a lot of circular arguments that I don’t understand. If you get an investor in, what will it be like?
Then it ceases to be affordable housing because they are profit-oriented. People can’t afford it, and that’s going to be a reverse of our fortunes,” he remarked.
