The Christian Council of Ghana has formed a technical committee to find a way forward for the stalled National Cathedral project.
The committee, comprising representatives from various Christian groupings, has been given one month to develop a practical funding model and make recommendations on the location and other key issues concerning the project.
Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana, Reverend Enoch Nii Narh Thompson, announced this after a closed-door meeting with the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
He said the committee’s recommendations would be presented to President John Mahama to guide decisions on the future of the project.
“Under this council, within a month, we will discuss issues relating to the practical intervention of funding, location and other things pertinent to the National Cathedral. So, we will within the month present the recommendations and expect the necessary decisions to be taken.”
The Council also called for the speedy completion of the forensic audit into the project, saying its findings would help Christian leaders assess the situation and determine the appropriate next steps.
The National Cathedral was announced in 2017 by then-President Nana Akufo-Addo as a national Christian worship and heritage centre.
It was commissioned in 2018, with groundbreaking ceremonies held in 2019.
However, the project has faced persistent funding and construction challenges, leaving it incomplete and raising questions about its financing and future.
