The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has tasked its National Disciplinary Committee with a two-week timeframe to investigate the petitions lodged against former Assin Central MP and presidential aspirant Kennedy Agyapong.
Henry Nana Boakye, the National Organiser of the NPP, stated that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) received several petitions and subsequently referred them to the disciplinary committee for investigation, adhering to party protocols and the NPP constitution.
He noted that the National Council endorsed this decision and assigned the committee, led by former Roads Minister Kwasi Amoako Atta, to finalise its work within a two-week period.
He clarified that the committee’s findings would be presented to the National Council, which would then make a final decision on the matter and impose any necessary sanctions.
Nana Boakye refrained from speculating on the potential outcome of the investigation, asserting that it would be inappropriate to prejudge the disciplinary committee’s work.
“The right constitutional and procedural process is being followed,” he remarked on Joy News, emphasising that the National Council, as the party’s second-highest decision-making body, would review the committee’s report before reaching any conclusions.
This situation arises amid escalating tensions within the NPP, as was apparent during a National Executive Committee meeting on Thursday.
Reports indicate that clashes occurred among party supporters outside the meeting venue, with some demonstrators chanting “Ken Must Go” in a clear reference to Kennedy Agyapong.
The unrest is thought to be connected to recent remarks made by the former presidential aspirant, who criticised the party’s leadership for what he termed the failure to operationalise the Afari Military Hospital.
The disciplinary committee is anticipated to deliver its report to the National Council within the forthcoming two weeks.
