The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is set to introduce a new series of banknotes, known as the Heritage Series, as part of efforts to modernise the cedi and improve its security and durability.
The new banknotes are expected to be officially launched on November 3, 2026, at the Bank Square in Accra.
Speaking at the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press briefing, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, said the new notes would feature enhanced security measures, improved durability and modern designs inspired by Ghana’s heritage, culture and national identity.
He said the upgrade has become necessary due to changes in currency circulation, technological advancements and the need to meet increasingly sophisticated security standards.
“The upgraded banknotes incorporate enhanced security features, improved durability, and modern designs, designs that reflect Ghana’s heritage and Ghana’s aspirations,” he said.
The new notes are designed to provide stronger protection against counterfeiting and withstand prolonged circulation.
They are also expected to help the Bank manage the currency more efficiently and reduce the cost of replacing damaged notes.
The Heritage Series will feature Ghanaian cultural and historical elements and honour national heroes. Each denomination will tell aspects of Ghana’s history while also reflecting the country’s aspirations for the future.
However, the Bank of Ghana stressed that the introduction of the new series will not invalidate the existing cedi banknotes.
The new Heritage Series notes will circulate alongside the existing ones, meaning the public can continue using the current banknotes after the launch.
The central bank has also advised the public not to rush to exchange or withdraw existing notes simply because of the introduction of the new series.
Dr Asiama further urged businesses, traders and financial institutions to handle banknotes properly by avoiding practices such as crumpling, writing on notes, stapling them or using them for decoration.
According to the BoG, proper handling will help preserve the quality of banknotes, reduce replacement costs and improve currency management.
The Heritage Series is being introduced under the theme: “The Cedi: Our Future, Secure, Designed to Last.”
