The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has disclosed that it has received three petitions concerning allegations of extortion and related activities made by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, against the Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
The OSP indicated that it had received a joint petition from two individuals, in addition to two separate petitions from other parties, all about the allegations.
In a statement released on Monday, August 24, 2026, the anti-corruption agency noted that it had acknowledged the public allegations and would evaluate the case to ascertain whether it falls within its statutory jurisdiction.
The OSP further stated that it would determine if additional investigative measures are necessary following its assessment of the case.
This development follows accusations made by Mr. Gyamfi, who alleged that Mr. Afenyo-Markin engaged in extortion. The Minority Leader has since refuted the allegation and expressed his intention to pursue legal action against the GoldBod CEO.
This controversy arises amid a public disagreement between the two regarding claims of GH¢22 billion in losses, approximately equivalent to US$1.7 billion, allegedly linked to the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme in 2025.
In the meantime, the United Party has submitted a petition to the Attorney-General and other anti-corruption and security agencies, requesting an investigation into the extortion allegations against Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
The petition was lodged by the party’s Communications Director, Solomon Owusu, and Legal Director, Andrew Appiah-Danquah.
