The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has asked Mobile Money Fintech Limited (MMFL) to stop the planned 0.75% charge on direct transfers from MoMo wallets to bank accounts for now, while more discussions are held.
The new fee was supposed to start on June 1, 2026, but it has been suspended to allow the Bank of Ghana and other stakeholders to review the decision carefully.
The proposed charge had already caused public debate, with many people worried about how it could affect digital payments and financial inclusion in Ghana.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, the central bank explained that the move is aimed at making sure customers are treated fairly and protected.
“This decision reflects our commitment to ensuring that any changes to charges in the mobile financial services ecosystem are introduced fairly, protect consumers, and support their financial wellbeing,” the statement said.
The Bank of Ghana did not say when the consultations would end or whether the proposed fee would later be changed or completely cancelled.
