The NPP presidential candidate and Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has appointed all four of his former rivals from the NPP presidential primaries as co-chairmen of his new policy committees.
Party insiders say this initiative is Dr. Bawumia’s plan to build a structured, data-driven policy framework that will generate credible, evidence-based recommendations for Ghana’s economy and governance.
The NPP Policy Committee sits at the top of this new structure, chaired by former Information Minister, Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.
His appointment is expected to bring strong intellectual and administrative discipline. The committee will oversee subcommittees covering jobs, energy, local governance, transport, natural resources, education, health, the economy, and other key areas.
Each subcommittee must conduct independent research, consult experts, and produce policy alternatives backed by solid data for Dr. Bawumia’s review.
Party insiders say the flagbearer wants to shift the NPP from reactive opposition to proactive governance preparation.
“Dr. Bawumia wants a party that doesn’t just criticise. He wants a party that can present Ghanaians with a clear, costed, and credible alternative at any point in time,” one source explained. “These committees are the foundation of that vision.”
The most striking part of the announcement is the inclusion of Dr. Bawumia’s former competitors. Kennedy Agyapong will co-chair the Employment and Jobs Committee, reflecting his advocacy for private sector-led job creation.
Kwabena Agyapong will lead Housing and Urban Development, a sector critical to everyday Ghanaians. Bryan Acheampong will co-chair Defence and Interior, bringing his experience in security.
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum will guide the Education Committee, building on his record in education reform.
Observers see this as a deliberate effort to turn rivalry into collaboration. Political analyst Dr. Domfeh remarked, “What Bawumia has done is essentially neutralise any lingering post-primary tension by giving each of these men ownership – real, substantive ownership of a critical policy area. He hasn’t just offered them titles. He has given them responsibility, and with responsibility comes accountability to the larger party project”.
The move also carries a broader strategy. Each of the four co-chairmen commands loyal supporters within the NPP.
By bringing them into one policy structure, Dr. Bawumia is consolidating those blocs into a united front ahead of the 2028 elections.
Party sources say the committees will begin work soon, with initial briefs and stakeholder consultations expected in the coming days.
