Afenyo-Markin vows to pursue GH¢15m defamation suit against Sammy Gyamfi

Lawyers for Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin say they will continue pursuing his GH¢15 million defamation suit against Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi despite the High Court’s dismissal of the case.

In a statement issued by Dehyena Chambers on Wednesday, October 14, the legal team said Mr Afenyo-Markin had instructed them to pursue the matter to its logical conclusion.

The lawyers indicated that they were awaiting a copy of the court’s ruling to study the decision and determine the appropriate legal steps.

The Accra High Court, General Jurisdiction 1, dismissed the suit after finding that the writ of summons failed to sufficiently identify the alleged defamatory statements as required under the High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules, 2004 (C.I. 47).

The legal team expressed concern that Sammy Gyamfi had relied on procedural objections rather than defending the substantive allegations against him.

It also argued that procedural irregularities in civil proceedings could be corrected, citing relevant legal principles in support of its position.

The GH¢15 million lawsuit arose from comments Sammy Gyamfi made during a TV discussion on August 22, 2026, in which he described the Minority Leader as an “extortionist” amid disagreements over the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.

Afenyo-Markin has maintained that the allegations were false and damaging to his reputation.
