Two people have died and 14 others sustained injuries following disturbances during the celebration of the Yam Festival at Nchiraa in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region.
According to the Bono Regional Police Command, the incident occurred on Saturday, October 3, 2026, after the festival programme had ended.
The Police said preliminary investigations indicate that the disturbances started at about 5:30 p.m. when Nana Tabiri Yaw II and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to his palace. A gunshot was reportedly heard during the procession.
The Police confirmed that two people died in the incident, while 14 others were injured. Thirteen of the injured persons, including a police officer, sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical treatment.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Following the incident, the Wenchi Divisional Police Command has intensified patrols in Nchiraa to prevent further disturbances and maintain public safety.
The Police said calm has since returned to the area and assured residents that efforts are underway to identify and arrest individuals involved in the violence.
