Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called for stronger support for Ghanaian exporters to help expand the country’s export sector.
Dr. Bawumia made the call after meeting the Federation of Associations of Ghana Exporters (FAGE) to discuss challenges affecting businesses engaged in both traditional and non-traditional exports.
According to him, Ghana can learn from export-driven economies such as the Asian Tigers, where exporters have received various forms of government support to expand their businesses and compete internationally.
He said the meeting with FAGE provided an opportunity to identify some of the major barriers facing exporters and discuss possible policy measures to address them.
Dr. Bawumia said more attention should be given to the regulatory environment to make it easier for exporters to operate. He also identified standards and trade-related infrastructure in countries where Ghanaian goods are sold as areas requiring support.
Other issues he highlighted include access to land, protection of acquired land, access to credit and Ghana’s foreign exchange and payments system.
He said addressing these challenges could help create a more supportive environment for exporters and strengthen Ghana’s position in international trade.
Dr. Bawumia also thanked FAGE members for attending the meeting and for presenting what he described as valuable proposals and ideas to his team.
