The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), working alongside other state institutions, has overseen the disposal of a 40-foot container of imported diapers from Spain that failed to comply with the required standards.
The exercise took place at the Vigour Safe Disposal Site at Shai Hills.
The operation was intended to stop the potentially hazardous products from reaching consumers in Ghana and endangering public health.
The shipment contained loose diapers stored in bales without proper packaging and under unhygienic conditions. After determining that the products did not meet the required standards, the FDA and its collaborating agencies ensured they were safely discarded instead of being distributed on the local market.
The FDA disclosed that the importer was responsible for covering the disposal expenses, in addition to paying the applicable statutory fines.
The consignment was intercepted during a joint inspection at the Tema Port conducted by the FDA, the Ghana Revenue Authority’s Customs Division (GRA-Customs Division) and National Security.
The Authority has urged importers to verify that their goods comply with applicable regulatory standards and obtain the necessary FDA authorisation before shipping products into the country.
