Ghanaian students pursuing their studies on government scholarships at the University of Memphis in the United States say they are at risk of dismissal due to outstanding tuition and accommodation fees allegedly owed by the government.
The affected students say the university has issued notices demanding payment of the outstanding amounts after their attempts to resolve the matter with the Scholarship Secretariat failed to produce a solution.
According to the students, the unpaid fees have already led to restrictions on their access to the university’s online portal, preventing them from using some essential academic services.
One of the affected students said that they have less than a week to resolve the issue before the university takes further action.
The student expressed concern that failure to settle the outstanding payments within the stipulated period could have serious consequences for scholarship beneficiaries.
“We have barely a week. If there is no solution to this problem, we are going to be in serious trouble. I don’t think the current administrative climate in the US will favour us in any way,” the student said.
The students are appealing to the government and the Scholarship Secretariat to urgently intervene and settle the outstanding tuition and accommodation fees.
They warn that failure to resolve the matter could result in the loss of their student status and disrupt their academic programmes.
The students are therefore calling for swift action to ensure that their studies are not interrupted by the unresolved financial obligations.
