Croatia captain Luka Modric has paid tribute to Lionel Messi following what he described as the Argentine superstar’s farewell from international football.
Modric praised Messi’s remarkable career with Argentina, saying the forward had achieved something special by leading his country to the World Cup title he had long wanted.
“I knew that it’s Messi’s farewell from the national team. What can I say about him? It’s a pity that he’s retiring, but it’s his decision and we have to respect it,” Modric said.
The Real Madrid midfielder acknowledged that he had suffered against Messi on several occasions, both while representing Croatia and during their years competing in Spanish football.
Despite their rivalry, Modric said watching Messi play had been a privilege because of the Argentine’s exceptional ability.
“He has done something incredible with the national team, he won the World Cup that he wanted and he’s one of the best players in the world,” he added.
Modric also reflected on his personal experience of facing the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, admitting that Messi had caused him plenty of problems throughout his career.
“But honestly, it’s been a pleasure watching him play because he is a unique player. I wish him luck,” Modric said.
Messi’s international career has included Copa América triumphs and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which ended Argentina’s long wait for football’s biggest international trophy.
