Stop putting phones and money in your brassieres — Oncologist warns

The Head of the Oncology Unit at the Tafo Government Hospital, Mrs. Angela Acquah, has cautioned women against placing mobile phones and money inside their brassieres, warning that the practice could pose health risks.

Her caution comes as Ghana joins the rest of the world in observing Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, a period dedicated to increasing public education on breast cancer prevention, early detection and treatment.

Speaking in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on OTEC News, Emmanuel Kamasah and Sandra Yeboah, Mrs. Acquah said keeping mobile phones close to the breasts for extended periods could expose breast tissue to radiation, potentially affecting cells over time.

She also warned against storing dirty banknotes and coins in brassieres, explaining that doing so could introduce germs and increase the risk of infections or other breast-related complications because of the sensitivity of the breast area.

Mrs. Acquah stressed that although there is currently no direct evidence establishing a link between the practice and breast cancer, keeping such items in the brassiere is not a healthy habit and should be avoided.

She encouraged women to find safer alternatives for carrying their valuables while making regular breast self-examinations and routine medical check-ups part of their health practices.
