New toll system launched at Kantamanto market by AMA

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has started enforcing a GH¢2 daily toll at the Kantamanto Market.

To support the exercise, the Assembly has deployed 100 special revenue collectors to improve revenue collection and sanitation control.

The move follows earlier talks between the Assembly and market leaders. They discussed ways to improve toll collection, keep the market cleaner, and restore order after its reopening.

The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, addressed the collectors before the rollout. He urged them to carry out their duties with discipline, professionalism, and confidence.

He also reminded them that the assignment is official and meant to strengthen the Assembly’s work.

He explained that traders who actively work in the market will pay the GH¢2 daily toll. This mainly applies to those using tabletops and open sheds.

He added that the system focuses on daily business activity instead of advance payments.

The Mayor also made it clear that the initiative is not meant to harass traders. He said the goal is to ensure people follow lawful revenue rules and to support essential services such as sanitation.

The AMA Coordinating Director, Douglas Annoful, also spoke on the arrangement. He said the Assembly has introduced a supervision system to ensure the process runs smoothly.

He added that the collectors will not work alone but will operate in teams for better coordination and accountability.

The AMA said the initiative forms part of wider efforts to increase internally generated funds. It also aims to improve cleanliness and order in one of Accra’s busiest trading centres.
