Morocco edge Black Starlets in dramatic late friendly defeat

Ghana’s Black Starlets suffered a dramatic 2-1 defeat to Morocco’s U17 side after conceding on the final kick of their second international friendly in Rabat.

The result saw the two-match series end level, with Ghana having won the opening encounter 2-0.

Morocco took an early lead in the 11th minute after capitalising on a poor clearance by the Ghana goalkeeper. The Black Starlets responded with attacking pressure, but Issah Alidu was unable to convert three one-on-one opportunities before the break.

Ghana’s task became more difficult shortly after the restart when captain Abdul Rafiu Issah was sent off for a strong challenge on a Moroccan attacker, leaving the Starlets to play most of the second half with 10 men.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Ghana continued to push forward and were rewarded in the 75th minute when Yaw Acheampong curled home a superb free-kick to level the score.

The Starlets then pressed for a winner, with Gavi Robinho seeing an effort blocked for a corner.

However, Morocco immediately launched a counter-attack from the resulting corner and scored with the final kick of the match to secure victory.

The friendlies conclude Ghana’s preparations for the WAFU Zone B U17 Championship, which will serve as a qualifier for the 2027 U17 Africa Cup of Nations.
