A young pawpaw seller has died after a forklift reportedly lost control and crashed into roadside traders at the Brewery Traffic Light in Asokwa, Kumasi.
The deceased, identified as Jennifer, was selling at the busy intersection when the incident occurred around 9:00 am
Eyewitnesses said the forklift was travelling from Asokwa towards Atonsu when it reportedly developed brake failure and veered towards traders near the intersection.
Ama Sefa, a fellow trader and friend of Jennifer, said the two had moved away from the road after the traffic light turned green when they noticed the forklift approaching at high speed.
She said the driver was shouting that his brakes had failed. While she managed to escape, Jennifer was struck and dragged by the forklift and died at the scene.
The driver reportedly fled immediately after the incident and remains at large. The forklift has since been impounded by police.
Personnel from the Asokwa Divisional Police Command arrived at the scene to control the crowd and restore traffic flow.
Jennifer’s body has been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy as police continue efforts to arrest the driver.
