Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, popularly known as “Ghana Jollof” on TikTok, has challenged the Ghanaian government to extradite her from the United Kingdom after the Ghana Police Service declared her wanted.
The police say Ms Kodua is wanted over allegations of inciting violence and publishing false information likely to cause fear and alarm.
According to the police, she allegedly used her TikTok account, “Ghana Jollof,” to make offensive and inciting comments and spread false information. Videos linked to the account have been shared by the police as part of their investigations.
One of the allegations relates to a video in which Ms Kodua claimed there had been an attempted coup because President John Mahama had angered some soldiers.
Responding to the development, Ms Kodua challenged the government to pursue extradition proceedings against her, arguing that she could not be extradited from the UK.
“I dare the government of Ghana that if they can use extradition to bring me from the country that I reside in to Ghana, they can’t,” she said.
“They can’t because there is no law that will allow them to extradite me.”
She also maintained that she would only return to Ghana voluntarily and argued that allegations of political persecution could prevent her extradition.
“If they see that I ( Ghana Jollof) sit behind a camera and see my face, what I, Jollof, want to tell the NDC government is that they can never and ever extradite me, Jollof, to Ghana,” she said.
“Unless I decide to come myself because the laws that we use for extradition, they have destroyed it. And when it’s political persecution, no government will allow you,” she said in the interview.
Meanwhile, Senior Nursing Officer Salomey Awity Baffoe has been remanded for two weeks by the Adenta Circuit Court 1 in Accra over allegations that she helped facilitate the distribution of content linked to the “Ghana Jollof” account.
Ms Kodua has disputed the allegation, saying the nurse was not an active social media user and had not shared her content. She also said she had no personal relationship with the nurse and questioned the reasons for her arrest.
Ms Kodua further alleged that the nurse’s arrest amounted to political persecution because her husband, who lives outside Ghana, is an active member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The Ghana Police Service, however, says its investigations have established that Ms Kodua paid Ms Baffoe and others to redistribute what it describes as false information across various social media platforms. Police also said they had uncovered alleged financial transactions involving the nurse and some high-profile individuals.
Ms Kodua remains in the United Kingdom while the police continue their efforts to pursue the case in Ghana. The matter has also raised questions about the legal procedures for extraditing suspects from the UK to Ghana, particularly where political persecution is alleged.
