Traders at the Kokomba Yam Market in Agbogbloshie, Accra, are opposing plans by the government to demolish the existing market to make way for a new 24-hour market.
The traders say they were not consulted before the decision was made. They also claim that the market’s leaders were not involved in any discussions about the planned redevelopment.
They are calling on the government to put the demolition plans on hold until proper discussions are held with the traders and other stakeholders.
The traders raised their concerns on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, during a meeting with some Minority Members of Parliament.
Speaking on behalf of the traders, the Secretary of the Kokomba Yam Market, Anthony Tayam, warned that demolishing the market without providing another place for the traders could affect the supply of yams to people in Accra.
“Very soon, there will be a shortage of yams in Accra. There will be a shortage because the people down here, if they bring their produce and there happens to be a demolition, where will they market it? Where will they stay?” he said.
Tayam also called on the government to ask the Mayor of Accra to stop what he described as threats to demolish the market.
“We are telling the government to tell the mayor to suspend his threats to traders in the market that he will demolish the market,” he added.
