The Weija-Gbawe Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Emmanuel Essel, has assured residents that there is no immediate cause for alarm following the controlled release of water from the Weija Dam.
The exercise follows heavy rainfall in areas upstream of the Densu River, which caused the water level in the dam to rise to 45.2 feet. Ghana Water Limited (GWL) subsequently began releasing some of the excess water through the dam’s gates as a precautionary measure.
Mr Essel said the current release remains limited, with only one of the dam’s five gates being opened to allow about six inches of water to flow.
He explained that NADMO is working closely with Ghana Water Limited to monitor the situation and will be informed if there is any significant increase in the volume of water being released.
“So far, there’s no cause for alarm,” he said, adding that the controlled spillage has not caused any distress in communities located downstream of the dam.
However, authorities have identified several communities that could be affected if the water level rises further or the volume of the release increases.
These include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Adankope and other surrounding communities in western Accra.
Mr Essel said preparations have been made to respond to any possible emergency and assist residents who may be affected by the situation.
Residents in the affected areas have therefore been encouraged to remain calm but stay alert and follow updates from NADMO, Ghana Water Limited and other relevant authorities.
