Newcastle United have reached a verbal agreement with Manchester City to sign Spanish midfielder Nico González in a deal that could be worth up to £50 million.
The agreement reported includes an initial fee of £47 million, with a further £3 million available in add-ons. González has also given the green light to the move after talks between the two clubs progressed quickly.
The 24-year-old midfielder is now expected to begin a new chapter at Newcastle, where he is set to play an important role in manager Matthias Jaissle’s plans.
The Magpies have been looking to strengthen their midfield following the departures of key players, including Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali.
González joined Manchester City from Portuguese giants FC Porto in January 2025 in a deal worth around £50 million.
The versatile midfielder was signed to provide additional quality in the centre of the pitch but struggled to establish himself as a regular starter at the Etihad Stadium.
He made 41 appearances last season but started only two Premier League matches after January. His limited role under new manager Enzo Maresca has contributed to the decision to allow him to leave the club.
Newcastle had identified González as one of their main midfield targets as they searched for an experienced player to complement their younger options.
The club had previously explored moves for players such as Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and João Palhinha before progressing with the González deal.
The transfer could also have an impact on Manchester City’s own recruitment plans. City are reshaping their midfield following Rodri’s move to Barcelona and are pursuing other targets, including Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández and Lille youngster Ayyoub Bouaddi.
