Two young girls narrowly escaped death after they became trapped in a fire that destroyed part of the family house of the late Murtala Mohammed at Dohinna Yili in Tamale.
In a statement, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said firefighters from the Tamale Teaching Hospital Fire Station rescued the girls from one of the burning rooms before bringing the fire under control.
According to the Service, it received a distress call reporting a fire at the 17-room compound house. A seven-member firefighting team was immediately dispatched and arrived at the scene within seven minutes.
When the firefighters arrived, they found the two girls trapped inside one of the rooms that had caught fire. They quickly began rescue and firefighting operations at the same time.
The girls were safely rescued and were not injured.
Firefighters brought the fire under control at 5:56 p.m. and completely extinguished it at 6:07 p.m.
The fire destroyed nine of the 17 rooms in the house. However, firefighters were able to save the remaining eight rooms and many of the belongings inside them.
No deaths or injuries were recorded.
The Ghana National Fire Service has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
