The High Court in Accra has postponed the EXIM Bank case involving NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, to July 27 to allow ongoing plea negotiations to continue.
The decision came after both the prosecution and defence informed the court that discussions aimed at resolving the case were still in progress.
Chairman Wontumi is facing charges over allegations that he obtained a GH¢14 million loan under false pretences for a farming project.
According to the prosecution, between 2018 and 2022, Chairman Wontumi and Thomas Antwi-Boasiako allegedly secured GH¢14.3 million from EXIM Bank through false representations using Wontumi Farms Limited.
Prosecutors further allege that Chairman Wontumi submitted a forged receipt to bank officials to support an application for an additional GH¢4 million loan facility.
He is also facing a money laundering charge for allegedly benefiting from funds prosecutors say were acquired through fraudulent means.
The prosecution further claims that the transactions caused EXIM Bank to suffer financial losses exceeding GH¢30 million.
Lawyers for the accused have requested plea negotiations, prompting discussions between both sides.
When the case was called on Monday, July 6, the prosecution told the court that the negotiations had not yet been concluded.
The court subsequently adjourned the matter to July 27 for further proceedings.
