High Court to hear Abu Trica’s bid to stay US extradition on July 9

Lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor says the High Court in Accra has moved forward the hearing of an application seeking to temporarily stop the extradition of his client, Ghanaian socialite Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, to the United States.

In a Facebook post on Monday, July 6, Barker-Vormawor announced that both parties have been asked to appear before the court on July 9.

“The High Court has just made an order bringing forward the date for hearing of motion to Stay the extradition of Abu Trica. Both parties must appear on 9 July,” he wrote.

The latest development comes after the High Court earlier ordered that Kumi be extradited to the United States, where he is wanted over an alleged $8 million romance scam.

Barker-Vormawor had earlier criticised the speed at which the case was handled and indicated that the matter could end up before the Supreme Court on appeal.

“I am out of Ghana for work. I just heard that the case of Abu Trica has been fast tracked and a judge has just ordered his extradition. Hmmm. FBI 1  Abu 1. I guess this issue goes to the Supreme Court,” he wrote on his Facebook on Thursday, July 2.

Abu Trica has been in custody since December 2025. Earlier this year, the High Court granted him bail of GH¢30 million with two justified sureties after he had spent several months in detention.

United States authorities are seeking his extradition over allegations of romance fraud. The hearing on July 9 is expected to determine whether the extradition order will be temporarily suspended while the legal process continues.
