Colombia knocks out Ghana to reach world cup last 16

Ghana’s journey at the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to an end after a hard-fought 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32.

A first-half goal by Jhon Arias was enough to send Colombia into the last 16 and knock the Black Stars out of the tournament.

The Black Stars started the match with confidence and almost took an early lead. Thomas Partey tried his luck from long range just a few minutes into the game, but his powerful shot went just wide of the post.

The match was soon disrupted by injuries for both teams. Colombia were forced to make an early substitution after striker Jhon Córdoba picked up a groin injury. He was replaced by Luis Suárez.

Ghana also suffered a setback when right-back Marvin Senaya injured his hamstring. Although he tried to continue playing, he could not and was replaced by Alidu Seidu before the first 15 minutes.

Just a few minutes after coming on, Luis Suárez made an immediate impact. He delivered a cross into the penalty area where Jhon Arias was left unmarked at the back post. Arias calmly finished the chance in the 14th minute to give Colombia a 1-0 lead.

The goal gave Colombia confidence, and they controlled most of the first half while Ghana struggled to create clear chances.

Colombia nearly doubled their lead when Luis Díaz found space in front of goal, but his shot went wide. Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi then produced an excellent save just before half-time, stopping Johan Mojica’s powerful header from close range to keep the Black Stars in the game.

Ghana looked more dangerous after the break. Antoine Semenyo produced the team’s best chance of the second half when he burst into the box and sent a low cross across the goal. Unfortunately, none of his teammates were there to finish the move.

Colombia continued to threaten on the counterattack. Luis Díaz thought he had scored early in the second half, but the goal was ruled out for offside. He later had another good chance, but Lawrence Ati Zigi made another important save to keep Ghana’s hopes alive.

As time went on, Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz made several substitutions in search of an equaliser. Elisha Owusu and Abdul Fatawu replaced Kwasi Sibo and Inaki Williams before Ernest Nuamah and Prince Adu were also brought on to strengthen the attack.

Despite the fresh legs, Ghana could not find a way through Colombia’s organised defence.

Colombia also created more chances before the final whistle. Davinson Sánchez headed straight at Ati Zigi from a corner, while substitute Juan Quintero came close with a long-range shot that went just wide.

In the closing minutes, the Black Stars pushed forward looking for a late equaliser, but they were unable to seriously test Colombia goalkeeper Camilo Vargas.

When the final whistle blew, Jhon Arias’ first-half goal proved to be the difference. Colombia secured a 1-0 victory to book their place in the Round of 16, where they will face Switzerland, while Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign came to an end.
